چکیده

Mucus constitutes a mesh-like hydrogel that pathogens must overcome to invade the underlying epithelium. The anti-microbial proteins, lactoferrin (LF) and lysozyme (LYS), are introduced during mucosal secretions and impact the microbiome by sequestering iron needed for bacterial growth and by lysing the cell wall. These proteins easily form ionic complexes and thus may have the potential to undergo strong electrostatic interactions with mucin, the main structural component of mucus. This work tested the hypothesis that these proteins alter mucus barrier properties. By investigating the impact of LF and LYS on particle and microbial transport in mucus, we can enhance understanding of the function of these proteins in mucosal immunity and explore their potential to be used as treatments to modulate the mucus barrier to pathogens and particulates.

Antimicrobial activity and synergism of lactoferrin and lysozyme against cariogenic microorganisms.

The present study evaluated the antimicrobial in vitro effects of the salivary proteins lactoferrin and lysozyme on microorganisms involved in the carious process, obtaining their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 25175) and Lactobacillus casei (ATCC 7469) were submitted to broth macrodilution of lysozyme at 80 mg/mL ...

Epidermal mucus, a major determinant in fish health: a review

Fish epidermal mucus contains innate immune components, secreted by globlet cells that provide the primary defence against different pathogenic microbes and act as a barrier between fish and its immediate niche. The major function of mucus includes entrapment and sloughing of microbes. The mucus also contains many factors such as antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), lysozymes, lectins, proteases, etc...

Ultrastructural localisation of lactoferrin and glycoprotein in human bronchial glands.

The distribution of lactoferrin and glycoprotein in human bronchial glands has been studied by electron microscopy using an immunoperoxidase method to stain the former and a periodic acid-chromic acid-silver methenamine sequence for the latter, each applied to ultrathin Epon sections. The distribution of lactoferrin corresponds to that of lysozyme. Lactoferrin and lysozyme are both confined to ...

Barrier properties of gastrointestinal mucus to nanoparticle transport.

Gastrointestinal mucus, a complex network of highly branched glycoproteins and macromolecules, is the first barrier through which orally delivered drug and gene vectors must traverse. The diffusion of such vectors can be restricted by the high adhesivity and viscoelasticity of mucus. In this investigation, the barrier properties of gastrointestinal mucus to particle transport were explored usin...

Effect of different amounts of Enterococcus faecium probiotic on some blood serum and skin mucus immune parameters in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) fry

The effect of different concentrations of dietary Enterococcus faecium on some immune parameters in common carp was carried out on 2019 in Ahmadabad farm. For this purpose, 600 fry with average weight 11.0 ± 0.5 g were reared in 12 plastic tanks (50 fish per tank) for 56 days and had been fed by 4 different concentration of E. faecium including [0 (control), 1×107 CFU/g (T1), 1×108 CFU/g (T2), ...
